Option one:  One of the most tragic themes of Night is Elie's realization that cruel treatment can turn good people into dangerous people.  Does Elie escape this fate?  Give examples from the text to support your answer.

Option two:  It is possible to look at Night as the story of Eliezer’s loss of innocence. It might be argued, too, that innocence is impossible after the Holocaust. Is this true? Is it tragic, or is innocence an impediment to survival, as when the Jews are too innocent to believe that Hitler really means to kill them?

Option one:  After the surgery on Elie's foot, he and his father must face being marched to a more remote camp or staying behind to face possible execution or liberation.  Elie's father decided that he and his son should leave the camp.  The patients left behind were liberated three days later.    Do you believe it was destiny, (Elie and his father choosing the more difficult march to another camp)?  Why or why not?

Option two:  What is destiny?  Do you think Elie and his father 

were destined for such horror, suffering and loss?  Why or why not?

Option one:  In the camps, Wiesel must struggle to stay alive and to remain human.  In your opinion, how well does he succeed?


Option two: Wiesel says he had become a "starved stomach".  He eats about 50 - 100 calories a day.  What do you eat each day?  How many calories do you think your daily meals add up to?

1. What did the men do on the eve of Rosh Hashana?

2. How did Elie feel while the others were praying?

3. What was Elie’s decision about fasting on Yom Kippur?  Why did he make that decision?

I hope each of you had wonderful break.  Since it had been so long, (one week), you may have forgotten what time class starts.  Class starts at 8:00 AM.  You should bring a notebook and at least one pen and one pencil for each class.

Option one: How do the people Wiesel interacts with strengthen or diminish his hope and desire to live? Talk about his father, Madame Schachter, Juliek (the violin player), the French girl, the Nazis. Which of their actions touched you the most?

Option two:  Draw a picture of Elie interacting with one of the other characters.  You can choose his father, Juliek (the violin player), the French girl or the Nazis.
